About Novigrad, Dalmatia

Taking the motorway from Zagreb in the direction of Zadar and leaving it at exit Novigrad/Posedarje, after a 15 minutes ride on the local road M2, E65, you will reach the well-known, picturesque, historic small fishing town of Novigrad, situated on the southern coast of Novigrad Sea, in a narrow bay. The town is built on the remnants of a fortress from the 13th century situated on top of a steep hill, overlooking the town.

The fortress was built by the counts Gusic-Kurjakovic. In the period 1386-1387 Elisabeth, wife of King Louis I of Anjou, and her daughter Maria, wife of King Sigismund, were held captive in it; Elisabeth was killed there as well. During the imprisonment, queen Elisabeth was embroidering the golden clergyman's dress (planita) for the Novigrad church and that same dress is still held in the parochial church of St.Mary's in Novigrad.

Thanks to the Zrmanja estuary, the Novigrad Sea is rich in fish and crustaceans, which is one of major attractions of Novigrad.
